A marquee opener in Toronto

The Toronto Maple Leafs will welcome the New York Islanders to Scotiabank Arena on Wednesday, September 30, 2026, at 7:30 p.m. ET. It is Toronto’s second game in as many nights after opening the season against Montréal on Tuesday, while New York begins its year in Toronto.

The matchup carries extra buzz because it brings together Gavin McKenna and Matthew Schaefer, the first overall selections in the 2026 and 2025 NHL drafts. Even so, this game may be decided more by Toronto’s veteran firepower and New York’s ability to create offense in front of Ilya Sorokin.

Toronto’s biggest names could shape the pace

Gavin McKenna is the player many Canadian fans will be watching most closely. The 18-year-old forward is expected to begin his NHL career on a line with John Tavares and William Nylander, which gives him two experienced playmakers who can finish chances and ease some of the pressure in his first week.

His impact may show up most clearly in the offensive zone. If McKenna can create separation, move the puck quickly, and keep Toronto’s attack flowing, the Maple Leafs could build scoring chances beyond their top unit. A quiet opener would not say much about his long-term ceiling.

Auston Matthews remains Toronto’s most proven finisher. If the Islanders focus heavily on McKenna’s line, Matthews may find more space to attack, and that can change a tight game with one shot.

William Nylander is another central piece of the Leafs’ offense. His ability to score and set up teammates makes him a natural fit next to McKenna and Tavares, especially if Toronto needs a late push.

New York’s young blue line and goaltending in focus

Matthew Schaefer gives the Islanders a defenseman who can influence the game at both ends of the ice. After winning the Calder Trophy as last season’s top rookie, he now steps into a spotlight matchup against the player taken first overall one year later. His puck movement out of the defensive zone may be especially valuable against Toronto’s forwards.

Schaefer was held out of New York’s final preseason game because of an upper-body issue, so his availability and workload are worth monitoring once the lineup is confirmed.

Ilya Sorokin could be the most important player for the Islanders if he gets the start. New York leaned on him heavily last season, and he led the NHL in high-danger saves. If he is sharp, Toronto may need a lot more than shot volume to break through.

Bo Horvat is New York’s clearest established scoring threat. He led the Islanders with 31 goals in 68 games last season, so Toronto will need to stay disciplined around the net, especially if New York earns power-play chances.

Mathew Barzal remains a key question

Mathew Barzal is one of the biggest lineup decisions facing the Islanders. He was placed on the injured non-roster list because of a knee issue, but he was expected to travel with the team and had not been ruled out for the opener.

If Barzal is cleared, New York’s attack becomes much more dangerous and much harder to contain. His presence would change the way Toronto has to defend through the neutral zone and around the offensive blue line.

Who has the edge in this matchup?

Toronto enters with a slight advantage because it is at home and has more established scoring options. Matthews gives the Leafs a reliable game-breaking weapon, while Nylander, Tavares, and McKenna provide multiple ways to pressure the Islanders.

Still, this is far from a simple call. Toronto’s game against Montréal the night before could leave it with less energy, and that opens the door for New York if Sorokin delivers a strong outing, Horvat finishes a chance, and Schaefer helps keep Toronto out of dangerous areas.

Prediction: Maple Leafs win a close one. That outlook becomes less certain if Toronto looks drained in its opener or if Barzal is cleared to play for New York.
